CONCERT REVIEW : Tide Lines – Barrowlands Ballroom Glasgow, 19th April 2024

The band Tide Lines, a recent inductee into the Barrowland Hall of Fame, performed at the venue for the second of three nights on a delightful spring evening in Glasgow. Following a delightful evening of music the previous night that left the audience satisfied, the band from the Scottish Highlands geared up for their second sold-out show at the renowned venue.

Tonight’s opening act is Lusa, a collective of musicians who specialise in synth-based music. Their sound, characterized by dark dance rhythms and Beth Malcolm’s exceptional vocals, captivated the Barrowland audience with a powerful performance. Despite its brevity, their set was filled with fervor. The band showed gratitude to Tide Lines for enabling them to perform at the esteemed venue. They concluded their set with their newest single, ‘Probably’, before exiting the stage to a rousing round of applause.

It was time for Tide Lines to take the stage, with intro music filling the room and anticipation ready to explode for their heroes’ return. The band members, starting with Alasdair Turner, followed by Fergus Munro and Ross Wilson, took to the stage to the amazing roar of the Barrowland audience. Robert Robertson greeted the crowd as the band kicked off the party with their hit song “Heroes,” which had fans singing and dancing along. The energy didn’t let up as the band continued with songs like “Small Town Living” and “Running at the Dark,” with Alasdair and Robert clearly enjoying every moment on stage.

During the opening part of the set, standout moments included the amazing performance of Innocent and Beautiful, Canan nan Gaidheal, followed by a stunning bagpipe solo from Alasdair that left the audience in awe. The energy continued to rise with songs like Since I Left This Town and Homeward Bound, and the crowd enthusiastically joined in singing the chorus of These Days with the lyrics “going to miss these days.” It’s almost certain that they will be back at the Barrowland for another round of three shows soon.

The band ended their set spectacularly, sending the crowd into a frenzy of dancing and singing to their hits Any Heart in a Storm, The Dreams We Never Lost, and 17 Again, finally closing with the outstanding Fortunes of the Fearless. As the band exited the stage, the anticipation in the venue was palpable, the crowd was electrified by the stunning performance. It wasn’t long before they returned to the stage, greeted with an incredible reception. They performed a two-song encore from their fantastic album Dreams We Never Lost, starting with The Young and the Restless. The Glasgow crowd enthusiastically sang along to Run with the Reckless and Young and Restless, suggesting they would continue this merriment for the rest of their lives. The crowd, comprising a wide age range, along with the band, thoroughly enjoyed the event. The show concluded with the impressive Far Side of the World. The opening lyrics, From the Stories I Have Told, resonated deeply that night as the band led the Barrowland on a captivating journey. It’s likely that the band spotted their Highland Girl in the crowd that night. As the song ended, the band bid farewell and expressed their gratitude to the audience before departing from the stage.
