CONCERT REVIEW : HOLLY JOHNSON, ROYAL CONCERT HALL, GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, 18TH JUNE 2025

Holly Johnson makes a triumphant return to Glasgow to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic album, *Welcome to the Pleasuredome*. The atmosphere in the venue was charged with excitement as the sound system played classic tracks from the 1980s, prompting enthusiastic sing-alongs from the audience. This evening’s performance is supported by a talented artist from Liverpool, who is also a close friend of Holly’s.

As the lights dimmed, the screen at the rear of the stage illuminated with Lee Griffiths’ name as he stepped onto the stage, expressing his gratitude to the audience for their prompt arrival. He commenced his set with the compelling “Silence Is Death” before sharing a personal anecdote about the previous evening. Griffiths recounted a stroll he took with Holly around Glasgow, during which they visited a bar called the Underground. Despite the modest attendance of six patrons, the establishment recognized Holly, and the host invited Holly to perform. He obliged by delivering a remarkable rendition of “Americano,” much to the delight of the small audience. He also performed a poignant version of The Beatles’ “Blackbird,” which Holly humorously claimed he would ruin.

The performance was brief yet impactful, concluding with a remarkable rendition of James Taylor’s “Sweet Baby James.” One song, in particular, resonated deeply with the audience: “Meet Me Halfway,” which conveyed a profound message. I highly recommend exploring Lee’s work, whether through online platforms or by attending a live performance; you are sure to be impressed.

The next performance featured Holly Johnson and his band, with the stage meticulously prepared and an electrifying atmosphere permeating the venue. It was evident that this event would be memorable. As the lights dimmed and the introductory music began, the band positioned themselves on stage, while a sign beneath the riser welcomed attendees to the Pleasuredome. The performance commenced with “The World is My Oyster,” as Holly made his entrance from the right side of the stage, progressing towards the centre. Dressed in a striking black leather, space-age jacket, a leather kilt, and black boots, he grasped the microphone, delivering vocals that were nothing short of impeccable.

As he engaged with the audience, surveying both sides of the stage, he transitioned into the second song, the album’s title track, “Welcome to the Pleasuredome.” The sound was extraordinary, demonstrating no signs of age despite the passage of 40 years. The performance captivated the audience, who remained on their feet from the opening tracks, dancing and singing along enthusiastically throughout the show.

Some of the highlights of the evening included notable solo work such as “Americanos,” “Love Train,” and an outstanding rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.” The concert showcased an impressive array of talent and is certainly a strong contender for concert of the year. The set concluded powerfully with “Two Tribes” before wrapping up with the iconic “Relax.” The audience in Glasgow was exceptionally engaged, singing along and dancing in the aisles, clearly sharing in the enjoyment of the performance. It was evident that Holly was relishing the experience just as much as the fans. The encore featured a single song, and it was fittingly “The Power of Love,” which served as the perfect conclusion to the night. The synergy between Holly and the Glasgow audience was remarkable, as they collectively celebrated the joy of music. As Holly departed the stage, he received a warm and enthusiastic reception from the audience.
