Karen from SMN had the opportunity to speak with emerging artist Shay O’Dowd ahead of his performance at TRNSMT. Their conversation covered a wide range of topics, offering valuable insights into Shay’s music, inspirations, and future plans. Here is what Shay had to share during the interview.
Karen (Scottish Music Network):
Good afternoon, and thank you for joining us. My name is Karen, representing Scottish Music Network. It’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to speak with you Shay O’Dowd. How has your day been so far?
Shay O’Dowd:
Thank you, Karen. My day has been going really well. I’ve just arrived at the festival, so you’re actually the very first person I’ve spoken to today.
Karen:
We’re delighted to have caught you before things get busy. Since your performance isn’t scheduled until after seven this evening, you have some time to settle in and perhaps explore the site a little. The weather today is a welcome change compared to earlier in the week. As you prepare for your set, are you feeling more nervous or excited?
Shay O’Dowd:
At the moment, it’s mostly excitement. I’m sure a few nerves will kick in just before I go on stage, but right now, I’m genuinely looking forward to performing.
Karen:
That’s wonderful to hear. There’s been a real buzz around your recent work, especially with the release of your new EP. Your influences – artists like Sam Fender, Lewis Capaldi, and Paolo Nutini – are evident in your songwriting, and your music has been resonating with audiences. With all that momentum, can fans expect to hear any new material during your set tonight?
Shay O’Dowd:
Absolutely. I’ve been working on a new EP with Jamie Squire from The 1975, which has been an incredible experience, as they’re one of my favourite bands. I’ll be debuting a few tracks from that upcoming project tonight, and I’m excited to see the audience’s reaction.
Karen:
That sounds fantastic. The TRNSMT crowd has been phenomenal all weekend, even with the unpredictable Scottish weather. Looking ahead, do you have any other festival appearances lined up for the summer?
Shay O’Dowd:
Yes, it’s shaping up to be a busy summer. Next week, I’ll be performing at Boardmasters, and I’ll also be supporting Deacon Blue at a show in the south of England. After that, I’m on the lineup for Latitude and Belladrum, among a few others. It’s been brilliant to kick things off here in Glasgow.
Karen:
That’s an impressive schedule! Are there any headline shows on the horizon?
Shay O’Dowd:
There are plans for headline shows after the festival season wraps up. Details are still under wraps, but announcements will be coming soon.
Karen:
We’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for those updates. In terms of new music, are you currently in the writing or recording phase?
Shay O’Dowd:
Earlier this year, I dedicated a lot of time to writing and recording material for the new EP. For now, I’m taking a short break from songwriting to focus on live performances and connecting with audiences at these shows.
Karen:
Your recent sold-out show at King Tut’s garnered a lot of attention. How did it feel to play such an iconic venue, especially with a packed house?
Shay O’Dowd:
It was an unforgettable experience. King Tut’s was actually one of our first major gigs, and to have it sell out before we’d even released any music was incredible. The energy from the crowd was something I’ll never forget.
Karen:
King Tut’s is certainly a legendary venue. You’ve also performed at St Luke’s – what was that experience like for you?
Shay O’Dowd:
Performing at St Luke’s was equally special. The show took place just before Christmas, so there was a festive atmosphere throughout the venue. It’s such a stunning space, and the crowd really made it a memorable night.
Karen:
Both venues have a reputation for their unique atmosphere and excellent acoustics. Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us today, Shay. We look forward to following your journey and hope to catch up again next year to hear about your continued successes.
