CONCERT REVIEW : The Libertines, Barrowland Ballroom, Glasgow, Scotland, 18th October 2024

The Libertines made their way back to Barrowland for the second of their two performances on the All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade tour. A sizable crowd formed early outside the venue, eager to see their favourite band in the iconic location where they had played before. Despite the rain in Glasgow that evening, the spirits of the fans waiting outside were not dampened, as they eagerly anticipated Pete and Carl’s performance tonight.

First on the scene in London was the innovative post-punk band, the Alien Chicks, who really stirred up excitement at Barrowland. Their impressive stage presence made a significant impact, captivating the audience from the start and never letting up. They delivered a dynamic performance, featuring standout tracks like “Short Sight,” “Cowboy,” and the exceptional “Candlestick Maker.” The trio made a memorable impression with their brief yet bold set. Be sure to catch them in Glasgow at McCulls early next year.

Coming up was Real Farmer from Holland, a band with a genuine edge, representing the post-punk genre. They took the stage by storm, instantly establishing a distinctive sound. This Dutch group, having only performed a few times on the Libertines tour, made a memorable impact in Glasgow. They have recently been signed to Peter Doherty’s Strap Originals label. Definitely a band to keep an eye on, as they are currently touring various locations in the UK.

The moment has arrived for The Libertines to return to Glasgow, with the stage gradually enveloping in dry ice while their introduction music begins and the lights dim. As Pete and Carl step onto the stage, the crowd’s volume skyrockets at their first appearance. They kicked off their set with the fantastic track The Delaney, igniting the audience’s excitement. The energy continued to surge as the band struck the first chords of What Became of the Likely Lads, leading to a spirited singalong.

The band was in excellent shape, performing a mix of classic tracks and fresh tunes from their recent album, All Quiet on the Easter Esplanade. Playing hits from Up The Bracket as well as their self-titled album, The Libertines, they expertly elevated the crowd’s energy before introducing some of their latest songs.

The latest songs meshed seamlessly with earlier ones, including standout tracks like “Baron’s Claw,” “Shiver,” and the exceptional “Night of the Hunter,” which distinguished itself from the rest. The Glasgow crowd embraced each tune as though they were familiar classics, having been played over the years. It was truly a splendid return for the band.

The band concluded the initial segment of the concert spectacularly, leaving the Glasgow audience breathless. The highlights included “Horrorshow” and “Mustangs,” and they wrapped up with “Can’t Stand Me Now” before exiting the stage for a brief intermission. It seemed that the audience appreciated the break just as much as the band did before their return.

The band came back to a hero’s welcome, launching into “Man With The Melody.” Their performance in Glasgow included an incredible encore set that electrified the historic venue. They played hits like “Last Post On The Bugle,” “Time For Heroes,” and “What a Waster.” The grand finale was a spirited rendition of “Don’t Look Back Into The Sun,” which had everyone at the Barrowland singing along passionately.
