CONCERT REVIEW : Sparks, Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, Scotland, 24th June 2025

A delightful and unforgettable evening with Sparks at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

The legendary Mael brothers, true maestros of unique artistry and theatrical flair, delivered a performance that was both effortlessly witty and musically brilliant, captivating the diverse Glasgow audience from start to finish.

The show immediately set a majestic tone, opening with the evocative “So May We Start” from the soundtrack to the movie Annette. This tour was proudly in support of their fantastic new album, Mad, and the setlist brilliantly showcased its fresh material alongside their rich back catalogue. Indeed, a generous five songs from Mad were woven seamlessly into the performance, with the album’s opener ‘Do Things My Own Way’ demonstrating the band’s continuous evolution and creative vitality.

From the infectious, pulsating energy of “This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us” that had everyone on their feet, to the mesmerizing, quirky charm of “The Number One Song in Heaven,” complete with Ron’s slow walk from behind his keyboard culminating in an energetic dance for a few seconds before he retook his seat, every note resonated with their signature, inimitable style. The setlist was a masterclass in balancing their vast, eclectic history with the exciting new chapter, ensuring there was something for every generation of Sparks fan.

Ron Mael’s iconic, stoic presence at the keyboard was a constant source of quiet amusement and fascination. His famously deadpan expressions and the occasional, perfectly timed raised eyebrow or subtle head nod provided a brilliant, understated counterpoint to Russell’s dynamic, soaring vocals and charismatic stage presence. The interplay between the two, a testament to decades of collaboration, was as compelling as ever.

The atmosphere in the Royal Concert Hall was electric, filled with adoration and palpable excitement for a band that continues to innovate and entertain with unparalleled originality.

The audience was left with beaming smiles, hearts full of joy, and a renewed, profound appreciation for their enduring brilliance and their unique place in music history. It was a truly wholesome, joyous, and utterly magnificent experience that reaffirmed Sparks’ status as living legends.
