Amyl and The Sniffers: A Wild Ride of Raw Energy and Punk Fury

When Amyl and The Sniffers took the stage at Edinburgh’s O2 Academy on Wednesday night they unleashed a tidal wave of unapologetic punk rock energy that left the crowd both exhilarated and exhausted by the end of the night. The band come from Melbourne, Australia, and have been making waves in the punk scene with their frenetic live performances and in-your-face attitude. This gig was no exception, delivering an unforgettable experience that captured the essence of punk rock’s raw power, energy & emotions.

From the moment the lights dimmed and the band members bopped onto the large stage to the dulcet tones of Shania Twain…! the energy in the room shifted to a fever pitch. Front woman Amy Taylor, commanded everyones attention with her sheer presence alone. As the opening chords of the first song “Control” rang out, the mosh pit erupted into a frenzy of bodies colliding and limbs flailing, a testament to the band’s ability to ignite a primal response from their audience and I can now appreciate why the photographers were only allowed in the pit for the first number as it was going to be a busy and oft quite dangerous night for the wonderful security staff who were kept busy constantly rescuing or ejecting the moshers, the Togs would’ve made their job more difficult and who wants smashed camera kit….no one that’s who.

The setlist was a mix of tracks from their self-titled debut album and their sophomore release, “Comfort to Me.” Each song hit like a punch to the gut, with the relentless drumming of Bryce Wilson driving the ferocious guitar riffs of Declan Martens. The bass lines, delivered by Gus Romer, provided a pulsating foundation that kept the crowd’s energy levels at a constant high.

One of the highlights of the night was undoubtedly Amy Taylor’s electrifying stage presence. Her uninhibited and often unpredictable antics kept the audience on their toes, never knowing what she would do next. She would leap off the stage and engage in spirited banter with fans in the front row which again had to be carefully policed by the security team.

In between songs, the band displayed a genuine camaraderie that added to the overall charm of the performance. Amy would take a moment to catch her breath and exchange playful banter with her bandmates, creating a sense of intimacy in the midst of the chaos then launch into a frenzied run around the stage and back to her mic stand. This authenticity resonated with the crowd, making them feel like they were part of an exclusive punk rock family for the night.

The setlist was a rollercoaster of emotions, from the aggressive and hard-hitting tracks like “Freaks To The Front” and “Security” to the more introspective moments found in songs like “Hertz” and “Maggot.” The diversity in their music showcased the band’s ability to balance their fury with moments of vulnerability. This emotional range was met with a reciprocated energy from the crowd, who shouted the lyrics back at the band with sheer gusto.

Towards the end of the set, the band unleashed their anthemic hit “Some Mutts (Can’t Be Muzzled),” a track that perfectly encapsulates their ethos of non-conformity and resilience. The chorus, “I’m not a lady, I’m a mutt,” became a rallying cry for the crowd, who chanted it back with defiant pride. The sense of unity in that moment was palpable, as fans of all walks of life came together to celebrate their shared love for music that refuses to be tamed.

As the final chords of the encore “Knifey” faded away, sweat-drenched and exhilarated concert goers spilled out of the venue, their faces flushed with a mix of exhaustion and elation. Amyl and The Sniffers had delivered a performance that was nothing short of amazing, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and eardrums of everyone lucky enough to witness it.

In a musical landscape often dominated by polished production and calculated performances, Amyl and The Sniffers remain a refreshing reminder of the unbridled power of punk rock. This Edinburgh gig was a visceral experience that transcended the boundaries between performers and audience, reminding us all that sometimes, all you need is a guitar, a drum kit, and an uncontainable desire to make some noise.
