CONCERT REVIEW : Simple Minds’ Jim Kerr & Charlie Burchill In Conversation, 19TH OCTOBER 2025

In a city that played a pivotal role in their journey, Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill came back not as renowned icons but as storytellers of their own experiences. Within the freshly renovated Citizens Theatre in Glasgow—marked by its exposed brick, luxurious velvet, and the lingering echoes of countless performances—the Simple Minds duo led a full house on a journey through themes of friendship, ambition, and the decades that have shaped their lives.

Welcomed with genuine warmth by broadcaster Billy Sloan, the evening celebrated the release of their forthcoming joint memoir, “Our Secrets Are the Same.” Unlike a traditional concert, the event lacked grand choruses or sing-along segments. Instead, two lifelong friends gathered to reflect on their intertwined musical journey—from the concrete terraces of Toryglen to the bright lights of stadiums and back to the streets that shaped their beginnings.

Kerr expressed himself in his characteristic, sincere, and wandering manner, weaving memories together like a poet painting a scene. In contrast, Burchill offered a calm, measured presence—witty, contemplative, and at times unexpectedly profound. The chemistry between them was evident in every exchange, a language honed over years of friendship before their aspirations soared.

Their tales sparked both laughter and warmth. A particularly memorable moment featured Kerr reminiscing about his father seeing an early performance and wryly noting, “Anyone who can make people throw their chips away, that’s a big deal.” This charming remark highlighted Glasgow’s humour and the everyday enchantment that has consistently been a part of Simple Minds.

What struck me the most was their sincerity. This wasn’t a self-praising event, but rather a candid conversation about resilience—the fragile interplay between creativity and business, the fatigue that goes with sustained effort, and the special bond that has kept the aspirations of two teenagers alive for fifty years.

A heartfelt, witty, and subtly deep return, Kerr and Burchill showed that Glasgow is not only the origin of Simple Minds but also the core of their most cohesive and emotionally resonant story.
