MULL HISTORICAL SOCIETY

ORAN MOR, GLASGOW

8th February 2024

“Bookends”

Colin MacIntyre, aka Mull Historical Society, is a multi award winning musician hailing originally from Mull. Tonight he brought a special show to the quirky venue of Oran Mor in Glasgow.

Why special?

Well, for starters he will have a hugely talented band on stage with him for a large portion of the unique set. Secondly, special guests such as Val McDermid and Liz Lochhead will, join him on stage to explain their collaboration with and influence on Colin and his music.

The venue was, unexpectedly, all seated as lines of almost quaint wooden seats filled all but the bar area. These seats were all occupied along with a number of fans standing near to the bar at the opposite end of the venue from the stage.

As Colin took to the stage he was greeted by a huge cheer and then… silence! I’ve never attended a gig in silence and it was a strange experience… not a sound or utterance bar the workings of the bar staff and occasional cough!

Colin was straight into his stride with a short solo set which garnered much acclaim at the end of each song. His stage craft was superb as he chatted to the crowd between (and sometimes during) each song.

His explanations and descriptions of the reasons and machinations of each song painted a picture in our minds and it was almost as though he was holding court at a house party and not performing for a decent number of fans.

The party really kicked off when the band joined him on stage. The musicianship was of a very high standard and really gave an expansive feeling to the whole experience.

The introduction of special guests such as the aforementioned Val McDermid and Liz Lochhead took the show to another level .

Lochhead in particular stole the show with her story telling and could have had a gig of her own!

A strange experience it may have been in many ways but very entertaining and Colin had that scarce skill of captivating an audience and holding their interest for an extended period.
