CONCERT REVIEW : LIAM GALLAGHER OVO HYDRO, GLASGOW Wednesday 19th June 2024

30 Years : Definitely Maybe Tour

30 years ago, the now defunct Oasis released the Definitely Maybe album to much acclaim and it has not only stood the test of time but has influenced a tsunami of like sounding bands and a culture for the disaffected youth of the UK and beyond.

Tonight, Liam Gallagher brought his merry band of musicians to Glasgow to prove the album still stands.

An early entry to the venue allowed the keenest of fans in on time to see the opening band… Villanelle.

Band member Gene Gallagher has grown up in the rock n roll world of his dad Liam Gallagher ands that could work in one of two ways for his new music career. Can he ride the coattails of his father or will he stand on his own two feet (with the help of his band mates obviously)?

As they took to the huge stage there were very few fans within the arena due to very unfamiliar sunny Scottish weather and the fact that the Scotland national football team were playing a match in the Euro championship (it was live on TV).

A short set by the lads was well received although it seemed a bit one paced; the band members looked moody and unengaged with the audience. Perhaps the lack of a crowd fed into that look; perhaps it’s just their way.

As the fans started making their way into the arena the next band took to the stage… The View are established and that translated into a raucous welcome from the crowd. The mixture of sunny weather and alcohol brought the best (and the worst) out of those present.

The View blasted through some hits and banging tunes to an appreciative audience as the arena filled. Many of the crowd members were clearly fans of the band and it made for a cracking set.

The biggest cheer during their set was when the news filtered through that Scotland had scored in their match against Switzerland!

The scene was now set for the Mr Gallagher to show if he still has the attitude and swagger.

A huge digital clock on the screens counted down the Definitely Maybe years (instead of the time) in anticipation of his arrival… Would it be a biblical return for the star?

The time was now and Liam strutted on stage dressed in black with the expected attitude and swagger; the rock n roll star was back and the aptly titled ‘Rock ’n’ Roll’ opener had the crowd bouncing. This was going to be big!

Liam ‘taunted’ the fans when he asked if Scotland were “getting leathered” at the football… it turns out they weren’t! On the theme of football, Liam is a well known fan of Manchester City Football Club and homage was paid by way of ‘MCFC’ printed on some stage props.

He thanked the crowd for coming when they could be “watching the football in the pub”.

I don’t think their attendance was ever in doubt!

The singer knows how to own a stage despite ever really moving or doing anything; his presence has been crafted throughout the years to compliment his belief that he is the greatest frontman ever… We’ll leave that for you to decide.

He performed the album songs with much confidence and to much acclaim from those present. ‘Half the World Away’, ‘Cigarettes and Alcohol’ and ‘Live Forever’ were just a few of the top tunes he (and his band) blew the roof off with; the set list had too many big hitters to list.

As the show came to it’s end Liam thanked everyone for coming because “this album deserves it”

According to the fans, who had assembled from all around the world, it deserved it and then some! Anyone in attendance would definitely maybe agree.

Cracking gig by one of the few genuine rock ’n’ roll frontmen still plying their trade.
