Legendary Scottish five-piece Trashcan Sinatras continue the countdown to their first album in a decade with the release of ‘vintage Trashcans’ single, Melodramatic – OUT NOW. Having marked their return earlier this year with the campaign-opening single The Bitter End and the warmly received two-hander, Bad Husband featuring Tracyanne Campbell of Camera Obscura, the band’s latest reveal represents one of the record’s most inward-looking moments, a journey of self-analysis paired with the band’s trademark melodic elegance.
Drawn from the forthcoming seventh album Ever The Optimist, set for release on Fri 31 July 2026, the song’s expectedly upbeat composition, gently charged with a leading bass line and honey-dripping vocal harmonies, blends with searching lyrical themes. Cautiously feeling his way into explore self-awareness, anxiety and the complex relationship between mind and body, acerbic frontman and lyricist, Francis Reader draws expansive ideas over the intricate sounds of a band, celebrating 40 years together this year, exploring their prowess as one of Scot-pop’s pioneering collectives.
In Reader’s hands the song reversed out of topical T-junctions before ultimately becoming a study on perspective, self-reflection and empathy, espousing the reflective spirit of Ever The Optimist. As a result, Trashcan Sinatras again prove themselves masters in the balance of introspection, warmth, wit and bright, primary colour-hued instrumentation.
Reader explains: “I was trying to write something about hypochondria but, probably because I was looking at the subject too narrowly, it became a song about solipsism; about the ‘mind and body mystery’ in general. It’s destructive to always be looking inward, always worrying about oneself, measuring meds and moods and the effect you’re having on people.
“I’m exhorting myself to look outward more, especially at a time now when there are so many people under genuine and immediate existential threat. Maybe we all are.”
Produced by Paul Savage, drummer of The Delgados and long-time collaborator with artists including Mogwai, Teenage Fanclub and Arab Strap, Ever The Optimist is Trashcan Sinatras’ seventh studio album. Whilst leaning into gentle experimentation, each track teased so far has reassured fans that the collection of 11 new songs remains rooted in the melodic instincts that have long defined their four-decade-long career.
Amongst the singles to have already hinted at the breadth of the album’s emotional palette, the hazy, late-night textures of The Bitter End offered the first glimpse of the band’s renewed creative momentum. Shortly after, Bad Husband showcased a buoyant duet between Reader and fellow Scottish musical light and friend, Tracyanne Campbell, setting quiet domestic psychodrama to music that spoke primarily of joy in a play of mischievous contrasts.
Alongside Campbell’s notable guest appearance, the band revealed that a collaboration with Green Gartside of Scritti Politti also lies in wait, joining voices on the still-to-be-released Hold On To Today. Ever The Optimist is set for release across multiple formats, including standard and collectors’ edition vinyl, CD and digital on the band’s own TCS Recordings.
Espousing the “less careerist and more careering” definition of a life inside Trashcan Sinatras over the last forty years, the unchanged line-up of Francis Reader, Paul Livingston (guitars), John Douglas (guitars), Stephen Douglas (drums) and Davy Hughes (bass) has slowly shaped their newest work via writing sessions scattered between mountain cabins, late-night poker sessions and quiet everyday routines.
Trashcan Sinatras’ story began in 1986, signing to Go! Discs two years later. Their formation in Irvine on Scotland’s west coast blew a fresh breeze into observational, literary and frequently romantic British guitar music. Initially supercharged by their 1990 debut album Cake and the standout single Obscurity Knocks, a further five albums followed, including 1993’s I’ve Seen Everything, featuring hit track, Hayfever,. Their third record, A Happy Pocket, was originally released in 1996 but rediscovered by a new generation in 2023, when its reissue returned the band to the UK Official Albums Chart.
Over the past two decades the group have remained quietly prolific, releasing the warmly received albums Weightlifting (2004), In the Music (2009) and Wild Pendulum (2016), while maintaining a loyal international audience through touring and carefully curated reissues. Prior to this year’s announcements, the last release from Trashcan Sinatras was the accomplished Lay Of The Land EP in 2022.
