The last several months haven’t been easy for Sheffield’s Ruiz. While he started 2021 in the midst of productivity, it didn’t take long for the inevitable to happen. Struck with Covid, Ruiz! spent time in hospital twice, also developing a healthy dose of pneumonia too for good measure.
Three months in bed is bound to stifle one’s creative juices, not to mention the fatigue and brain fog that comes with catching Covid. Now, thankfully however, Ruiz! is back, bringing with him his effortless blend of ‘60s rock’n’roll, electronica, punk, pop, psychedelia, and dark rock.
His latest single ‘5 Seconds’ is three minutes of heady psychedelic pop, following in the same footsteps as previous singles such as Morning’, ‘Blue Mediterranean’ and ‘Please Baby Please’.
“5 Seconds is a song about finding courage in a difficult situation.” Ruiz! explains. “It could be love related, friends, family or general life. Never take things for granted – it could all change very rapidly! It’s a cliche but it ain’t over until the fat lady sings. It was inspired by broken dreams. I am an optimist and believe that this is the best of all possible worlds, or is it?”
These ideas and feelings of positivity might well be something Ruiz! needed during the months he was ill, but they’re also something people in general can take solace in. And after the past couple of years, as the UK has gone from one shit show to another, we could all benefit from that.
