We caught up with Lacuna shortly after they concluded their set on the BBC Introducing stage, where their performance had the audience dancing and singing along enthusiastically. Here’s what the band shared with Karen during a brief interview.

Good afternoon. My name is Karen, and I’m here with Scottish Music Network. Today, I’m delighted to be joined by the members of Lacuna. For the benefit of our readers, could you please introduce yourselves?
Olivia:
Hello, I’m Olivia.
Will:
I’m Will.
Sean:
And I’m Sean.
Jack:
I’m Jack.
Karen:
It’s a pleasure to meet you all. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful, sunny day here in Glasgow!
Sean:
Absolutely – we’re very grateful for the weather.
Karen:
We certainly are! With music in the air and the sun shining, it’s the perfect setting for an interview. Is this your first time here?
Olivia:
It’s not my first time in Glasgow, but this is our first performance here as a band.
Karen:
How has the experience been so far?
Olivia:
It’s been fantastic – we’ve really enjoyed it.
Jack:
It’s been brilliant. The atmosphere is just wonderful.
Olivia:
And the sunshine has made it all the more special.
Karen:
You’ve just come off stage, correct? How did your set go?
Olivia:
Yes, we literally just finished performing. It was an incredible experience.
Karen:
How were you feeling before going on stage? Were there any nerves or particular excitement?
Olivia:
We were fortunate to play on the BBC Introducing stage. Many of our friends were performing before and after us, which made the environment feel very comfortable and supportive.
Karen:
That’s great to hear. It’s such an intimate space, which must enhance the experience.
Olivia:
Absolutely, it felt fantastic.
Karen:
I know you’ve probably been asked this many times, but could you share the story behind the band’s name?
Olivia:
I’d be happy to. When I was 14, I was in my bedroom thinking about starting a band. I was a big Nirvana fan and fascinated by Latin, so I browsed through a list of Latin words and picked one that resonated with me. The name has stuck with us ever since.
Karen:
So you’ve managed to find something truly unique – that’s impressive!
Olivia:
Exactly! It’s not easy these days.
Karen:
I’ve heard from other bands how challenging it can be to find an original name, so well done! Did you debut any new material today?
Olivia:
We didn’t perform a brand-new song, but we did play our upcoming single, “Lover”. Although it hasn’t been officially released yet, we’ve included it in our live sets a few times.
Karen:
How did the audience respond?
Olivia:
The crowd’s reaction was fantastic. People were really dancing along – we definitely felt a lot of love in the audience!
Jack:
It’s always a blast playing that track, especially given its dynamic intro and the funky, heavy section in the middle.
Olivia:
Yes, it went over really well. Everyone seemed to enjoy it.
Karen:
That’s wonderful. Do you have any other festival appearances lined up this summer?
Olivia:
Yes, we’ll be performing at Kelburn Garden Party next weekend, followed by Belladrum.
Karen:
Fantastic! I’ll see you at Belladrum – I’m looking forward to catching your set there.
Olivia:
We’re really excited. Our summer is packed with festivals. We also recently played at MacArts, a beautiful church venue we’ve always wanted to perform at, which was a significant milestone for us.
Karen:
Do you have any additional shows planned?
Olivia:
This summer is primarily festival-focused, but we’re embarking on a series of headline shows across the UK in September and October – including Manchester, Wales, London, Brighton, and even Rotterdam.
Karen:
That sounds like a busy and exciting schedule!
Olivia:
It certainly is – but we’re loving every minute.
Karen:
Are you continuously working on new music?
Olivia:
Absolutely. We’re always writing and creating new material.
Karen:
That’s fantastic to hear.
Olivia:
With so many band members, each bringing their own influences, there’s always fresh inspiration. Our sound is quite eclectic as a result.
Karen:
Who are your main musical influences?
Jack:
There are so many, but some of the key ones would be The Big Moon and Cocteau Twins.
Olivia:
Definitely Cocteau Twins, and R.E.M. as well.
Jack:
And several others.
Olivia:
Lana Del Rey is also a significant influence for me.
Karen:
That’s fascinating! Do your influences extend beyond music?
Sean:
Definitely. When we’re brainstorming ideas, we often share mood boards and imagery, not just playlists. We try to evoke a particular atmosphere in our music.
Olivia:
Emily and I are quite active on Pinterest. We draw a lot of inspiration from visual sources, including art and quotes.
Karen:
That’s wonderful to hear. It’s been an absolute pleasure speaking with you all. We’ll be following your journey closely and look forward to catching up again, perhaps next year, to see how things have evolved. Best wishes for your upcoming shows and enjoy the rest of your day.

Is there anything you’re particularly looking forward to today?
Olivia:
Just soaking in the atmosphere – and maybe treating myself to a tuna sandwich!
