Pop diva Sophie Ellis-Bextor dropped in to Glasgow’s SWG3 venue to promote her latest release ‘Perimenopop’, and gave her army of fans an up close and personal short set of new tracks, hits and a Q & A.
Having had an earlier stop off in Edinburgh on the promotional tour that afternoon, Sophie took to the Glasgow stage around 8pm. Adorning a sparkly purple mini dress and trademark heels, the singer received an almighty cheer when the lights went down and the intro music blasted from the amps. With a smile to make the cheeriest of Cheshire cats jealous, she opened her set with recent single release Relentless Love. This track is included on the Perimenopop album, and the six track set tonight would also include a further two singles from the recent release.
Theres no band tonight joining the singer on stage, instead opting to sing live to a backing tape which doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of her fans all singing along, word perfect as you would expect. Sophie alternated the newer tracks with other classics including the Alcazar track Crying at the Discoteque, the collaboration with DJ Spiller, Groovejet which was her first number 1 UK single, and finished off the set with the classic Murder on the Dancefloor. The evening was rounded off with a question and answer where the singer took questions from the audience.
This was a great evening organised by Assai Records to help promote the album, and gave fans of the artist a chance to see her perform in a much more intimate venue than she would normally perform in. Originally scheduled for The Galvanisers Yard part of the venue, the show was switched to the upstairs TV Studio stage, a more intimate setting, with a sold out 500 crowd all jockeying for the best vantage point, but you get a great view of the stage from all areas. Newer tracks were well received and these songs interspersed with older classics kept the crowd on their toes throughout, and as everyone knows, a Glasgow audience doesn’t need any excuse for a boogie! A great night out in a great venue, with a great artist on top form. Top marks all round!
