GLASWEGIAN SINGER, SONGWRITER AND PRODUCER JOESEF RETURNS WITH NEW MUSIC FOLLOWING ACCLAIMED DEBUT ALBUM PERMANENT DAMAGE

Glaswegian singer, songwriter and producer Joesef today returns with new single “Separate,” signalling a new era following 2023’s debut album Permanent Damage, which was top #20 in the UK Official Albums Chart and received critical acclaim. Where Permanent Damage was written on guitar and wrung from heartbreak, “Separate” signals a new era for Joesef – his instantly recognisable voice now given room inside an electronic soundscape, built as much for headphones on a late night cab ride home, as the dancefloor. The track was produced by Barney Lister (Joy Crookes, Olivia Dean, Obongjayar) and Joesef. “Separate” is the first material to be played at a series of intimate club nights Joesef has taken across Glasgow and Edinburgh this summer. Rather than announcing the songs online first, he’s been quietly dropping them into sets for unsuspecting crowds, making the club the first place his new music is heard.

“Separate is about a specific experience where I knew it was probably the last time I’d ever see someone. It’s a strange feeling trying to imagine your life without somebody, who at one point, you couldn’t imagine living without. The first verse reflects the initial grief of the loss, while the second is the imminent feeling of anger and rejection.” – Joesef

Permanent Damage took Joesef from emerging Glaswegian singer to one of the UK’s most distinctive young artists, gaining over 400M streams with headline shows including a sold-out Roundhouse and three hometown sold-out shows at Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom, alongside appearances at Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, All Points East and Montreux Jazz Festival. He has supported Jungle across North America, including New York’s 13,000-capacity Forrest Hills stadium, Paolo Nutini at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro and Rina Sawayama on her Hold The Girl tour. Having been shortlisted for the BBC Sound of 2020 and winning Best Breakthrough Artist and Best Album at the Scottish Music Awards, Joesef has picked up fans including Elton John and Booker Prize-winning author and fellow Scot Douglas Stuart.

Known for creating cinematic visuals, previously drawing inspiration from films such as Trainspotting, Kids and Beats, Jeremy Artherton Lin’s “Gay Bar” and Wolfgang Tillman photography, Joesef’s visual world has been praised as a “celebration of queer intimacy” (Attitude Magazine). Understanding he was queer from an early age, Joesef was raised by 00s pop culture online, juxtaposed against his tight-knit community in the East End of Glasgow.
