After four four upbeat pop singles, including latest The Pavement, Irvine’s 19-year-old pop singer Abbie Gordon shows another side to her songwriting on Let It Die, out today, Friday 7th August.
An acoustic-led heartbreaker, Let It Die opens with what appears to be an idyllic snapshot of love, but soon reveals the turmoil under the surface and the imminent end of this doomed affair. Abbie’s vocals once again shine, crystal clear and leaving every bit of emotion on display.
Written and produced with Hugo M Hardy, a key collaborator of breaking act Nieve Ella, Let It Die has been a recent live favourite at Abbie’s headline King Tut’s show, TRNSMT festival and her first London date supporting up-and-coming US artist Avery Cochrane.
“Let It Die’ is a lot more stripped back and vulnerable than the other songs I’ve released so far,” says Abbie. “I wrote it about being in a relationship where, even though nothing is really wrong, it feels like something’s missing. It’s no one’s fault, we’re just drifting apart. It’s scary knowing you have to have that conversation, but sometimes it’s the only way for both people to move forward and be truly happy. I’m very excited to share it.”
Support from key streaming services shows Abbie is catching the right ears. Already this year she’s been Apple Music’s ‘Ascending’ artist and her last single The Pavement was added to Spotify New Music Friday lists in the UK and 17 other countries. For Let It Die, Spotify has added Abbie to their RADAR: First Listen emerging artists programme, with Top 10 placement on NMF UK & Ireland, the cover of the RADAR UK & Ireland playlist and a Top 5 spot on New Pop UK.
Abbie’s glistening vocals and whip-smart lyricism turn her generation’s complex toils into a real-time diary of growing up disgracefully. Through her signature knockout one-liners and anthemic melody lines, Abbie documents her feelings and mis-steps, learning (or not) as she goes. Her cool-girl fables call out the b.s. with each chunky-booted step.
Live, Abbie has paid dues opening for fast-rising contemporaries like Kerr Mercer on tour and Calum Bowie at the Barrowland Ballroom, with headline shows at Glasgow’s Poetry Club and King Tut’s. Her TRNSMT debut on the BBC Introducing Stage was a triumph and she played her first London show supporting US diva Avery Cochrane in July.
