It was a night for the newbies at King Tuts Wah Wah Hut on Thursday as a few bands were let loose on the famous stage to showcase their talents.
Tonight’s second band was the one to focus on, The Provans, hailing from the East of Glasgow. The young alternative / indie band comprises Marc on vocals and guitar, Max on lead guitar, Scott on bass and Tony bringing up the rear on drums and percussion. Formed around 12 months ago and still cutting their teeth, this would be the band’s first visit to the famous venue on St Vincent Street, however having recently played the stage at SWG3 the boys are no strangers to the Glasgow gig circuit. They’re currently playing thru some demos of new material but at this time they haven’t got anything down on tape yet.
Tonight’s short set would be five tracks, opening with Heaven on Your Skin. Shoot me With Your Tears and Again followed before an ambitious cover of The Verve classic Bittersweet Symphony. An untitled track closed their set, which was well received by the Glasgow crowd, and well deserved on this showing.
Having spoke to the band briefly beforehand, they could easily pass for your average teenage bunch of lads on any street corner, however once they took the short few steps to the stage, they transformed, oozing confidence and enthusiasm for what they do. Yes, they are still rough round the edges but time and experience will polish that as they hone their talents and find their feet. They already have the basic skills, musically they are fine and there is much to admire of their songwriting at such a young age. There is definitely a bright future ahead for The Provans.
