CONCERT REVIEW – ROXY MUSIC – OVO HYDRO GLASGOW 10TH OCTOBER 2022

The crowds had gathered outside the OVO Hydro early to take in the atmosphere as the Roxy Music 50th Anniversary show rolled into town. This is the first time the four original members Brian Ferry, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay, and Paul Thompson had played together since 2011. The atmosphere in the venue was electric, on this the opening night of the UK leg of the anniversary tour which finishes  in London on the 14th of October.

The support band was Nilufer Yanya who played a beautiful opening set that really set the mood with her superb vocals that had the audience focused on her set, introducing new songs from her new album Painless. The venue filling up fast, were enjoying her set, the ideal warm up to the main event, leaving the stage to a great reception, a sure sign she has gained a good few new fans to her musical sound.

The stage crew working hard clearing the equipment off the stage, the first look at the Roxy Music set started to emerge, as the pa announcement requested the audience take their seats as the 10-minute warning was sounded. Shortly after the lights went down, intro music playing as each member took to the stage to a round of applause as the took up their positions then Brian Ferry walked on to the stage, the eruption of sound was deafening as he waved to the audience. As the intro music faded Ferry sat at the keyboards and opened the show with the excellent Re-Make / Re Model from their debut LP from 1972, this was the perfect start to the show as each member had their own solo part, taking a bow to the audience and thanking them along the way. This was followed with the excellent Out of the Blue and The Bogus Man, the Glasgow audience were now out of their seats singing and dancing along to the music. The set was a real dive into some of the bands back catalogue, digging out real treats along the way with the hits from Roxy Music.

The Glasgow audience was in full voice during the wonderful Oh Yeah (on the radio), dazzled by the giant led screens that formed the huge backdrop showing images of the band performing and a magnificent array of colours and semi terminal shapes drawing the audience full attention to the band and screens.

It was interesting listening to the developing sound of the band’s music through the years, this was performed perfectly and was a magical moment to be in the presence of the talents that were on the stage in front of you.  As the band weaved its way through the setlist, it was time for the big hits including To Turn You On and Dance Away, giving the audience a taste of what was to come. Was Glasgow ready to party?  Yeah they were, as the band played the epic Avalon the sound level was raised now as the Roxy Music juggernaut was at full throttle, the awesome Love is a Drug and Virginia Plain were certainly moments the audience would never forget,  hearing these classic’s performed live with the four core members of the band, was a dream come true for a lot of the younger fans in the crowd, seeing  and hearing  these performed in front of them.

Roxy Music closed the set with the excellent Jealous Guy cover from John Lennon, before signing off with the excellent Do the Strand from the For Your Pleasure album. This was a night of fantastic music performed by the legendary Roxy Music. Tonight, was a big stage performance, the huge LED screens beaming the magnificent sound of the music from Roxy Music around the arena. Tonight, Glasgow was on cloud nine when all four members came together, delivering A 50th Anniversary show not to be missed.
