CATATONIA – LAND OF OUR FATHERS JOLA

This unofficial bootleg CD captures the Welsh maestro’s in action at the Newport Centre (26/3/98) as well as 5 other bonus tracks. At the end of a highly successful UK tour, the band returned to their homeland to play a triumphant gig in front of a sell-out crowd all chanting ‘Wales, Wales, Wales…..’, and is a superbly recorded illustration of what the band have become – one of the best acts to come from Wales in the past decade, and certainly a live force to be reckoned with. Kicking off with their Welsh supremacy anthem “International Velvet“, Cery’s Matthews cajoles and tantalises the audience in her own inimitable way, storming through a fantastic set of tracks from their first two albums as well as throwing in some classic B-Sides.

Many of the songs are fast and furious, fired out at immense speed, with only snippets of conversation from Cerys in her alluring accent. She sings at full force throughout, screaming and roaring out the words, in her own unique way.

The music is boisterous and energetic, Matthews’s voice dramatic, the lyrics poetic, especially in the style that Matthews bellows them out. Highlights include the aforementioned “International Velvet“, along with the wonderfully aggressive “I Am The Mob“, the chunky “Bleed“, the haunting “Way Beyond Blue“, the jaunty “Mulder And Scully“, the powerful “Jump Or Be Sane“, and the rampagingly exquisite “Road Rage“.

On this showing the band prove that they are a first-rate Live act However, there is even more to come in the form of four BBC Radio sessions (including the recent uplifting single “Strange Glue“) and a further version of “Mulder And Scully” recorded at the Riverside Studios. All in all, this CD adds up to a highly memorable enhancement to your collection.
